North Elementary, located in the village of Birch Run, Michigan, confronts the unique challenges of serving a diverse student body with a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. With a poverty rate close to 60%, the school is faced with the task of not only enhancing academic performance but also ensuring equitable access to quality education. The conventional "kill and drill" approach to mathematics wasn’t working, leaving students disengaged and teachers searching for a solution that would meet the varied learning needs of every child. North Elementary needed a solution that could reach all students, embracing the whole child while fostering both perseverance and deep conceptual understanding in math.
To meet this challenge, North Elementary pivoted to ST Math—a neuroscience-backed, game-based math curriculum designed to build a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics through visual learning. This shift allowed students and teachers to experience math in a whole new way, emphasizing the importance of productive struggle and giving them freedom to tackle challenges at their own pace.
ST Math's unique approach to teaching through puzzles and interactive challenges matched perfectly with North Elementary's commitment to cultivating perseverance and resilience among its students and educators.
Math Coach Ann Keipert, alongside Principal Kris Paquette and Superintendent Diane Martindale, spearheaded the integration of ST Math into the curriculum, emphasizing productive struggle and real-world problem-solving skills. The program's non-verbal nature and emphasis on conceptual learning empowered teachers and students alike to embrace a more engaging and transformative way of learning.
Implementing ST Math was a calculated decision aligned with the school's STEAM Math Goals, aimed at enhancing community engagement and preparing students for personal and career readiness. Teachers also underwent a mindset shift, embracing productive struggle, small group instruction and taking on a facilitator role, allowing students to experience the satisfaction of solving problems on their own.
Based on an analysis of Pickerington's 3rd, 4th and 5th grade performance on state tests before they started using ST Math (2014) and after (2017).
The results of North Elementary's innovative approach to math education were nothing short of remarkable. Within three years of implementing ST Math, students' scores on the NWEA® MAP® Growth assessment saw an impressive leap from the 70th to the 90th percentile. Furthermore, Michigan state assessment scores climbed by 14%, underscoring the success of the program in not just meeting but exceeding academic growth goals.
The perseverance of students flourished, evident in their eagerness to tackle complex problems and assist teachers in navigating the productive struggles integral to ST Math. Student engagement also soared, as evidenced by the enthusiastic participation in school-wide competitions and celebrations, like the much-loved pizza parties for those who completed their ST Math journeys.
“If people just spend a day in our school, they can tell from the dialogue that the kids have with each other and their teachers about JiJi,” said Keipert, highlighting the permeating positive effect of ST Math in the school culture. “They’re even talking about JiJi with the custodians!”
The North Elementary school community has embraced ST Math wholeheartedly, with even non-verbal students completing numerous journeys within the program and finding joy in their learning. Parents and teachers have observed a profound growth in critical thinking and collaboration skills among the students, further demonstrating the program’s impact beyond academic metrics.
North Elementary’s journey with ST Math is a testament to what can be achieved when educators unite under a shared vision of resilience, student-centered learning, and equitable access to education. The significant improvements in math understanding and performance among students across diverse socio-economic backgrounds highlight the transformative power of adopting an innovative approach to math education.
The significant improvements in both math understanding and performance, especially among students from traditionally underserved populations, demonstrates that with the right approach and resources, every child has the potential to succeed and overcome obstacles. North Elementary’s commitment to fostering perseverance, engagement, and critical thinking, ensures every student is prepared not just for academic success, but for life.
In Birch Run, Michigan, North Elementary stands as a beacon of hope, proving that with the right tools and mindset, educational excellence is within reach, regardless of one’s socioeconomic background.
“ST Math is for all students,” said Paquette. “It’s equitable.”
