A recent analysis for Brazosport ISD revealed that their district wide elementary adoption of ST Math has led to significant gains in students scoring Approaches, Meets, and Masters on STAAR. This large-scale study, which included over 5,000 students using ST Math, compared district accountability scores from 2013 (pre-ST Math) to 2019.
ST Math aligns with TEKS to ensure Texas students develop deep, conceptual understanding of math concepts to equip them for the challenges of the 21st century. Below is a small sample of ST Math puzzles that were designed to meet the rigorous demands of the Texas math standards.
Model the action of joining to represent addition and the action of separating to represent subtraction.
Standard: Number and Operations K.3A
Game: Push Box
Use concrete and pictorial models to compose and decompose numbers up to 120 in more than one way as so many hundreds, so many tens, and so many ones.
Standard: Number and Operations 1.2B
Game: Alien Capture with Numerals
Use concrete and pictorial models to compose and decompose numbers up to 1200 in more than one way as a sum of so many thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
Standard: Number and Operations 2.2A
Game: Pulling Petals
Determine the solutions to problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes using pictorial models or tools such as a 15-minute event plus a 30-minute event equals 45 minutes.
Standard: Geometry and Measurement 3.7.C
Game: Time Unroll with Clocks
Represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with equal denominators using objects and pictorial models that build to the number line and properties of operations.
Standard: Number and Operations 4.3.E
Game: JiJI Cycle Select Basket
Describe the meaning of parentheses and brackets in a numeric expression.
Standard: Algebraic Reasoning 5.4.E
Game: Which Parentheses?
Generate equivalent numerical expressions using order of operations, including whole number exponents and prime factorization. NOTE: ST Math grade 6 content is not included in Texas Home Learning but is available for purchase.
Standard: Expressions, equations, and relationships 6.7A
Game: Exponential Notation
Write and solve equations using geometry concepts, including the sum of the angles in a triangle, and angle relationships. NOTE: ST Math grade 7 content is not included in Texas Home Learning but is available for purchase.
Standard: Expressions, equations, and relationships 7.11C
Game: Missing Angle LI
Write an equation in the form y=mx+b to model a linear relationship between two quantiles using verbal, numerical, tabular, and graphical representations. NOTE: ST Math grade 8 content is not included in Texas Home Learning but is available for purchase.
Standard: Proportionality 8.5I
Game: Linear Balloons
ST Math Pre-Kindergarten is a comprehensive blended learning curriculum that includes the five mathematics domains identified in the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines by TEA: counting skills, adding to/taking away skills, geometry and spatial sense skills, measurement skills and classification and patterns skills. The program combines:

Every school and district’s needs are different, and COVID-19 has created unique challenges for teachers and students. With strong implementation, ST Math can mitigate learning loss, and help students succeed on grade level. MIND is seeking philanthropic partners to fund staff, training and research in order to provide additional, tailored support for schools across the state. To learn more about how you could partner with us to support Texas students, contact our Social Impact team at socialimpact@mindresearch.org.
Chris Hara serves as the Program Manager for VILS residing in Seattle, WA. Prior to joining MIND, he was a middle school teacher in California where he was lucky enough to experience ST Math in his own classroom. It transformed his instruction from rote, procedure-heavy lessons to dynamic and differentiated facilitation. As a Program Manager, he enjoys working with administrators nationwide to foster a deep, conceptual understanding and love for mathematics.
Jamie Rynda is an Education Success Consultant located in Minneapolis, MN. Jamie has her elementary and middle school education degree from the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and her Masters in Educational Leadership from St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. She has over 10 years of teaching experience in both elementary and middle school math. Jamie has both a passion for mathematics and technology integration and is excited to bring these two passions together at ST Math. Jamie loves to spend time being active with her two young children, knitting and trying new foods to eat!
JiJi is a 3-foot-tall penguin on a journey through the world of ST Math. Students help JiJi overcome obstacles by solving math puzzles – and they associate JiJi with the thrill of challenge and success. JiJi crosses the screen every time a student successfully completes a puzzle, leading them to the next challenge. JiJi is curious, persistent, patient, and friendly.
JiJi’s name means “little chicken” in Mandarin.
Grade K Numbers & Operations: K.3.A
Model the action of joining to represent addition and the action of separating to represent subtraction.
These puzzles ask students to model addition and subtraction by joining and separating birds on a telephone line. Students use the manipulative to find the total number of birds.
Grade 2 Numbers & Operations: 2.6.B
Model, create, and describe contextual division situations in which a set of concrete objects is separated into equivalent sets.
In this example the student has determined that if each purple monster eats 2 pears, as shown by the rate in the top left corner, than 8 pears should be separated equally to feed 4 purple monsters.
Grade 4 Numbers & Operations: 4.3.E
Represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with equal denominators using objects and pictorial models that build to the number line and properties of operations.
This puzzle asks students to match a collection of fractions represented with a circular model to a single point on the number line. The blue pieces represent positive numbers, the red indicates a negative number.
Grade 7 Expressions & Equations: 7.10.B
Represent solutions for one-variable, two-step equations and inequalities on number lines.
In this example, the student must find the value of variable “a”. This two-step equation, 4 + 3a = 7, is represented on a number line.
